In a major stride toward improving nutrition governance and community health outcomes, the Abia State Government officially inaugurated its State Council on Nutrition on 23 July 2025, under the umbrella of the Nutrition 774 Initiative (N‑774).
This milestone reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to decentralizing nutrition efforts and empowering states to take ownership of localized nutrition strategies. The inauguration brought together key stakeholders from across sectors—including the State Ministry of Health, local government nutrition focal persons, civil society organizations, development partners, academia, and nutrition experts—to form a high-level advisory and coordinating body for nutrition governance.
The Council is tasked with:
- Monitoring progress on N‑774 objectives
- Supporting LGA-level nutrition activities
- Championing budgetary prioritization of nutrition services
Governor Alex Otti emphasized that while Abia has allocated 15% of its budget to health and 20% to education, the N‑774 Initiative introduces a systematic framework for monitoring, reporting, and accountability across all 17 LGAs.
“This Council will ensure that nutrition is mainstreamed into development planning at every level of our state. Abia is ready to lead by example,” said a representative from the State Ministry of Budget and Planning.
The Council’s composition ensures cross-sectoral coordination: commissioners, LGA chairpersons, planning officials, and other stakeholders collaborate to institutionalize nutrition governance.
The event highlighted that malnutrition is not only a health issue—it affects productivity, education, and long-term economic growth. With the national Nutrition 774 Initiative as its framework, Abia State is poised to be a model of effective nutrition governance.
The Council is expected to:
Mainstream nutrition into state development planning and budgets
Implement community-based interventions across all LGAs
Strengthen data systems for tracking and reporting nutrition outcomes
Engage traditional, religious, and community leaders in grassroots advocacy
The inauguration sets a precedent for other states, showcasing Abia’s commitment to evidence-based nutrition governance and grassroots impact.
