In a major milestone for public health and nutrition, Governor Umar Namadi officially inaugurated the Jigawa State Council on Nutrition 774 on 24 October 2025, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to combating malnutrition, promoting food security, and strengthening community-based nutrition interventions.
The inauguration followed a courtesy visit by Mrs. Uju Rochas-Anwukah, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Health, representing Vice President Kashim Shettima, as part of the national rollout of the Nutrition 774 Initiative under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Mrs. Rochas-Anwukah emphasized that successful implementation of Nutrition 774 requires strong collaboration between federal and state authorities, multisectoral coordination, and active grassroots engagement.
Governor Namadi commended the Vice President’s leadership and outlined Jigawa State’s pioneering efforts in community-based nutrition programmes:
Masaki Programme – providing nutrition support to approximately 1.3 million beneficiaries across vulnerable communities.
Tom Brown Supplement Programme – empowering women to locally produce nutritious food supplements with technical support and regulatory oversight.
Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Food (RUTF) in collaboration with UNICEF – ensuring life-saving interventions for malnourished children and vulnerable households.
The Governor assured stakeholders that Jigawa aims to be the first state to fully implement the Nutrition 774 Initiative, mainstreaming nutrition into health, education, agriculture, and women affairs programmes.
The newly inaugurated Council is chaired by Governor Namadi and includes members from key ministries such as Budget & Economic Planning, Finance, Agriculture, and Basic Education. The Permanent Secretary of Budget & Economic Planning serves as Council Secretary.
The Council’s mandate includes:
- Coordinating nutrition interventions across all LGAs
- Monitoring progress on N‑774 objectives
- Promoting multi-sectoral collaboration and evidence-based programming
- Championing sustainable funding mechanisms for nutrition programmes
Governor Namadi emphasized the importance of grassroots engagement, strong partnerships, and accountability to ensure that no child or household in Jigawa suffers the long-term consequences of malnutrition.
The launch of the Jigawa State Council on Nutrition 774 marks a strategic milestone in the state’s journey toward better health outcomes, food security, and sustainable development. By institutionalizing nutrition governance and prioritizing multi-sectoral coordination, Jigawa State is setting a national benchmark for other states to follow.
“This Council will ensure that nutrition interventions reach every community, every child, and every household. Our goal is to build a healthier, stronger, and more productive generation,” Governor Namadi said.
The event underscores Jigawa State’s dedication to transforming the nutritional landscape, strengthening maternal and child health systems, and reinforcing its commitment to the national Nutrition 774 Initiative.
